Sainz: Tyre Allocation for 70th anniversary race a "Headache"

Formula one McLaren Team's driver Carlos Sainz Jr. stated that Formula One teams are facing trouble with the tyre strategy in qualifying for 70th Anniversary Grand Prix since the soft and medium tyres show similar durability.

Pirelli has decided to make the soft tyres one notch softer than the ones which were used in last week's British Grand Prix and hence brought in C2 C3 and C4 compound tyres.

The drivers discovered during the practice session that it was hard to maintain the softest compound that is C4 since it had less durability and the C3 compound also produced similar tyre conditions. The drivers stated that the C3 and C4 compound had similar pace making these tyres not the right choice for starting a race with.

The situation seems a bit messy since the teams only have three sets of medium C3 tyres. The C2 hard tyres per weekend is also not enough. However, the C4 compound comes in eight sets which the drivers don't like to drive on.

The Formula One teams had to figure out different tyre strategies during the Friday's session to get optimal advantage. However, teams such as McLaren which focused on the soft tyres described the tyre allocation as a "Headache" since they were not able to maintain the pace they were expecting in the race since the tyres were not performing well as they required.

Carlos Sainz Jr. stated that "I think it's going to be a bit of a headache for everyone, It's not so much whether you can go through to Q2 on the soft or the medium, it's what you prefer to start the race in, independent of whether you go through or not."

He further added that "We know that it's a weakness of our car to handle these softest ranges, so we want to make sure we had enough track time today, and also because later in the weekend we're probably going to need the harder compounds."

Red Bull team's driver Alex Albon agreed to what Sainz Stated. He said that the C4 is not the best choice since it’s not the fastest tyre as per this week’s session and that it is "not a great choice by Pirelli".
