On Tuesday, the government stated that M1 category of vehicles which is equipped with tubeless tyres may not necessarily require to carry spare wheel or tyre. A tyre repair kit is mentioned by the government, to be carried as a standard item in the vehicle of the M1 category.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways says that M1 category of vehicles are basically passenger carrying vehicles which comprises of maximum 8 passenger seats and a driver seat.
Gazette of India notification says that,"Provided further that in case of M1 category of vehicle fitted with tubeless tyre and supplied with tyre repair kit as a standard item, it may not require a ready to use or temporary use spare wheel,"
The rule states that a tyre repair kit must be presented standard and stored in the vehicle which is to be used in situations when the tyre has a puncture and requires to be sealed by pouring sealant into the tyre, provided that there is compressed air to be filled.

It was mentioned in the notification that the rule may be called as the 'Central Motor Vehicles( seventh Amendment) rules, 2020' and the vehicle categories that come under this rule are the M1 which has the capacity to carry maximum mass of 3.5T and N1 manufactured after October 1, 2020 equipped with tyre pressure monitoring systems. It shall confirm to AIS- 154 which will be amended from time to time until the corresponding BIS specifications are notified under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act,2016
"Provided that vehicles fitted with tyre pressure monitoring system approved as per AIS 110 shall deem to comply with requirements of AIS 154," the notification added.
The new amendment was a necessity since the boot space was always compromised as the spare wheel took up the space which even though is useful in some rare situations, remains as a component which is not used often when the vehicle fitted with tubeless tyre gets a puncture.
