Hankook Tire, the world's largest tyre manufacturer, is expanding its original equipment business to include the ID.4, the first electric SUV from Volkswagen. The ID.4 will be equipped with the Ventus S1 evo 3 ev tyre, which was designed exclusively for electric vehicles, to fulfil the demands of this drive technology. Sizes ranging from 18 to 21 inches are partially fitted with Hankook SEALGUARD puncture protection technology, depending on the equipment type. The VW ID.4 GTX, the twin-engine brother of the ID.4, is also available with original equipment tyres in 20 and 21 inch sizes. It's as fuel-efficient as an ID, as sporty as a GTI, and as comfortable as an SUV.
“The prototypes of various electric vehicles from VW were already running on Hankook tires. We are pleased to be able to further expand and support the portfolio of alternative drive systems with the ID.4 tyres together with our long-standing global original equipment partner Volkswagen,” says Jeongho Park, Executive Vice President and Director of OE Division. “With this, we want to make an additional, important contribution to sustainable mobility.”
Reduced rolling resistance, lighter weight, and greater load-bearing capacity are all important attributes for electric vehicle tyres in order to enhance battery performance and range while also supporting the concept-related increased vehicle weight. Hankook engineers supplied the EV tyre Ventus S1 evo 3 ev with a double-layer carcass constructed of a newly created high-performance fibre to suit these unique criteria. It has excellent stability and a low tare weight in relation to its size.

The tread compound of the Hankook Ventus S1 evo 3 ev tyre, to be used on the Volkswagen ID.4 SUV has been tuned to the needs of high driving torque deploying electric vehicles, while optimising rolling resistance at the same time, for exceptional grip in wet and dry situations. Due to the reduced sidewall height in the 20-inch dimensions, an additional steel-based reinforcement is used in the bead area, contributing to greater sidewall stiffness. This enables a sharp, direct steering reaction in addition to a flawless fit of the tyre on the rim.

In the Hankook 19-, 20-, and 21-inch measurements for the VW ID.4, the Hankook SEALGUARD sealing technology automatically closes punctures up to 5mm in diameter within the tread region. Even in the improbable event of a nail puncture, a trip can be resumed without issue and the tyre does not need to be changed with SEALGUARD. As a result, SEALGUARD-equipped vehicles no longer need to carry a spare wheel, freeing up room in the boot, reducing weight, and avoiding the need for a potentially risky wheel change at the roadside.
