Leading tyre manufacturer Goodyear and TuSimple which is a global autonomous trucking technology company has confirmed that they are planning on a strategic partnership which will provide solutions for tyre management to the Autonomous Freight Network (AFN).
Goodyear and Tusimple mentioned that they will provide services to enhance the safety and operation of autonomous trucks. In addition to this, the two multinational companies will conduct tyre wear studies to analyse and provide solution as to how autonomous trucks and tyres can help better predict maintenance, understand tyre longevity and reduce the carbon footprint of fleets.
The two companies has also stated that the data collected will provide a better idea regarding the difference between an autonomous and human driven vehicle, of-course with respect to the tyres.
According to Erin Spring, director, new ventures, Goodyear, “With our leadership in products, fleet support and advanced innovations, Goodyear is applying knowledge to help deliver performance and safety with autonomous vehicles.”
TuSimple launched the AFN in the month of July, aiming to provide reliable low-cost freight transportation throughout the lower 48 US states through the use of Level 4 autonomous trucks.
“Autonomous trucks offer game-changing advantages for both shippers and fleets,” explained Robert Brown, senior director external affairs, TuSimple. “One of the most powerful advantages is the increased capacity, which comes as a result of the fact autonomous trucks can operate nearly continuously, and with this dramatic increase in truck utilizations comes the need to better understand predictive maintenance requirements.”

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company started in 1898 with just 13 workers producing bicycle and carriage tires. From that first bicycle tire, Goodyear quickly grew to become the world's largest tire company, a title it earned in 1916 when it adopted the slogan "More people ride on Goodyear tires than on any other kind."
Today, Goodyear has facilities across the world and annual sales of more than $15 billion. In addition to Goodyear-brand tires, we produce other well-respected international brand names, including Dunlop, Kelly, Fulda, Sava and Debica, and our non-tire business provides rubber products and polymers for a variety of markets.
