Formula 2 To Use Different Tyre Compounds at Silverstone

Formula 2, yet again will have different tyre compounds which will be nominated for the race that is going to take place at Silverstone. The race will consist of hard compound tyres alongside the medium tyre. In FIA Formula 3 racing, the teams were able to nominate only one tyre each weekend. However, this is not the case anymore because the hard compound tyres will be used in both weekends.

Formula 1 is running back to back racing in the same circuit this season and so F2 and F3 boss Bruno Michel has made a proposal to mix up the compounds that pirelli has provided to get another variable.

At the Red Bull Ring in Austria, all the four tyre compounds were used in F2 across two events and F3 also switched from medium to the hard compound tyres. Mario Isola, head of Formula 1 explained the fact that due to different conditions and demands that the Silverstone track presents on tyres, the level of flexibility in choosing the tyre compounds was also not possible.

Isola stated that “It’s been an interesting start to the season in Formula 2 and Formula 3, especially thanks to the performance of the new 18-inch tyres in F2 and the impact they have had on strategy. Moving onto another double-header, we have again looked to mix up the tyre nominations for each weekend in F2 to add an extra element of unpredictability. ”

He further added that,“Due to the well-known severity of the Silverstone circuit, it’s not been possible to go any softer for F3, so we have the hard tyre for both weekends."

“For the same reason, we have to keep the hard choice during both weekends for F2, but we do have some flexibility with the softer tyre – moving from medium at the first race to soft at the second race. This presents a different challenge for the drivers in terms of lap preparation and higher ultimate performance.”

The tyre wear was minimal on the new 18-inch F2 tyres at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The conditions that the teams had to face in the Hungaroring was a whole another story as the performance that the medium tyre versus soft tyre presented was not close to the alternative strategy that was put forth by the teams which resulted in them succeeding the sprint race after most of the drivers were forced to make a pit-stop
