Dave Robson: Tyre And Track Behaviour Was Confusing

Dave Robson, head of vehicle performance stated that the tyre and the behaviour of the track at Barcelona in the Spanish Grand Prix of 2020 has been confusing for the Formula 1 team.

Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen scored first Q2 appearance of the season and and qualified better than Esteban Ocon's Renault. Meanwhile, Williams knocked out both the teams out in the Q1 session which has been the the teams best performance throughout the season since the Austrian Grand Prix.

However, Romain Grosjean of Haas team managed to finish in the top six of the practise sessions but unfortunately he moved back from his stance in the qualifying session and hence raced 17th behind his team mate Kevin Magnussen.

Dave Robson had explained that they have had "slightly odd and disappointing event so far." However, the team felt that they "got most of what the car had to offer"

He stated- "Coming here in August is certainly very different to being here in February and also quite different to when we normally come in May, So although everyone is familiar with the track I think the way that the track has behaved and the tyres have behaved on the track certainly has confused us, frankly."

He added, "And I think the way some cars seem to have been unexpectedly quick and others unexpectedly slow at various times over the last day or so suggests to me that other people have been a little bit caught out."

He further added "but that said, I don't want to take anything away from Kimi today - he was pretty outstanding, I think. We'll see tomorrow whether that is their genuine pace in the Alfa - that they understand and can hold onto. But fair play to him, he was extremely strong."

Pirelli had decided to use the C1, C2 and C3 tyres which were earlier the choice in the British Grand Prix a few weeks ago which resulted in the teams trying out new strategies to churn out better performance in the race.

Dave Robson mentioned, "We thought we'd made some progress overnight and FP3 was again a little bit disappointing. So we made some more changes and qualifying was better, fortunately, but not a brilliant session for us but in the context of the weekend so far we did ok - there wasn't too much more left."
