Lando Norris: The Hard Compound Tyres Are "Garbage"

Formula 1 driver Lando Norris says that the hard compound tyres offered by Pirelli felt like "garbage" while driving in the free practise session for Spanish Grand Prix. He mentioned that he had better grip on wet tyres than the hard compound.

The Global pandemic had resulted in change of plans. The Spanish Grand Prix was moved from May to mid of August which is known for being the hottest period of the year in Catalonia.

Pirelli decided to use the C1, C2 and C3 compounds in Barcelona since they believed that these set of tyres can withstand the extreme heat conditions and also the G-force put forth by the cars known for being the fastest in the history of F1.

These tyre set were the ones used in the British Grand Prix. Since there were tyre issues, the tyre was made one step harder than the ones used in British Grand Prix.

According to the Mclaren driver Land Norris, the C1 compound was not so useful while he was driving in the practise session on Friday.

"Garbage. I felt like I had more grip on the wets, I don't know why," said Norris, I think it was similar for everyone." Norris said

He added, "Any time anyone was on the hard tyre they looked awful and then they went on the medium or the soft and improved massively. I don't think it's just us. The balance is just about OK on the soft and the medium, but as soon as you put the hards on it feels terrible, but that's the way it is.

"I think we have to understand what we want to do for our plan tomorrow and the race, but it should be a little bit more exciting."

Red Bull's driver Max Verstappen stated that he too thought that the tyres should have been "a bit softer". He mentioned that the tyres were manageable even though the knowledge gained from pre-season testing was irrelevant.

Verstappen said- "It's so much warmer now that whatever you learn in winter testing is not quite relevant,"

He added, "We are using all the hardest compounds. It's OK, it's manageable. I would have liked a bit softer but it is what it is."
