F1 racing is one of the toughest races in the world which consists of huge aerodynamic impact and major involvement of tyre strategies to churn out the best output from F1 cars.
As mentioned, tyres play a key role in determining the race output of each team in F1. Throughout the history of F1, teams have played with the tyres to determine the end result of a race. The F1 cars depend on tyres a lot and hence it is important for the teams to figure out which tyre best suits their overall strategy for racing.
But, these are facts about the tyres which the majority of the F1 enthusiasts have knowledge of, however, a mysterious gun-like equipment placed above the tyre, was used by the teams for the first time at Bahrain’s F1 pre-season test which has made everyone puzzled.
With some digging, we have come to the conclusion that the gun is known as the VESevo which is produced by an Italian company named MegaRide to test the F1 tyres.

The VESevo gun for F1 tyres A.K.A Viscoelasticity Evaluation System –EVOlved has been carefully designed with the help of vehicle dynamic simulations by the University of Naples Federico II
A hammer-like motion on the tyre helps the VESevo gun understand and provide data on the viscoelastic characteristics of the rubber. The hammer-like motion is to not damage the rubber.
We have noticed that several MegaRide guys were downloading the data on to their computers which tells us that many F1 teams are using the equipment however, we do not know how many F1 teams are using this device. The MegaRide gun has already been used by Trident in F2, F3, while other squads have used it in Formula E, DTM and MotoGP. However, it is understood that Bahrain testing was the first time it’s been put to use in the F1 pitlane.
