The Tire Industry Project (TIP) of the WBCSD has released a Roadmap to accelerate the effect of the tyre value chain on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 with the aim of addressing some of the world's most urgent challenges by 2030.
Tire Industry Project- TIP's 11 member companies collaborated with value-chain partners to create Sustainability Driven: Accelerating Impact with the Tyre Sector SDG Roadmap. The Roadmap explains how the tyre industry can contribute to the SDGs while transitioning to a low-carbon, stable, and resource-efficient economy.
Bridgestone, Continental, Cooper Tyre, Goodyear, Hankook, Kumho Tyre, Michelin, Pirelli, Sumitomo Rubber, Toyo Tyres, and Yokohama Rubber are part of the Tyre Industry Project.
The Roadmap outlines how the tyre supply chain communicates with the SDGs; the fields where the tyre industry will have the most impact; and key steps to scale and accelerate contribution to the SDGs.

“The tyre sector interacts with all 17 SDGs, but the Roadmap puts focus where the sector has the greatest potential to lead, accelerate, or influence action toward the 2030 Agenda,” said TIP Director, Anne-Cécile Rémont. “Seven impact pathways to maximize positive impact and minimize negative impact were identified across three main themes: supply chain, operations, and products and services.”
Recognizing the relevance of the SDGs' opportunities and threats to various stakeholder groups, the Roadmap was developed in collaboration with a wide variety of global stakeholders, including business organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and subject matter experts, with assistance from advisory company ERM.
The SDGs are recognized as a framework to tackle the world’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges, and WBCSD’s SDG Sector Roadmaps aim to inspire businesses to translate global needs and ambitions into business solutions. “By applying their creativity and innovation to develop these solutions, companies and entire sectors will be in a better position to manage risk, anticipate demand, capture growth markets, and strengthen supply chains”, said Peter Bakker, President and CEO of WBCSD.
