Marangoni, an Italian retreading company has built a new RINGTREAD system -- the Ringbuilder Saturn, which is turning out to be one of the most cost effective cold retreading systems ever. The exclusive new technology guarantees high performance and value for money retreaded tyres.
The product builds on the proven success of the 70-year-old Italian company's RINGTREAD System. What is the RINGTREAD system you ask?
The RINGTREAD System is their patented technology wherein they retread tyres by placing a pre-vulcanised ring on a buffed tyre without any splicing at all. These pre-vulcanised rings can be customised for different types of treads and different tyre sizes. What this does is, it completely negates the complications that come with flat treads and splices.

You see usually in cold retreading, a flat pre-vulcanised tread is used but not in a closed ring structure like you see in the RINGTREAD system. Usually, a flat tread has to be cut up into a suitable length for the tyre and then be stuck onto the carcass with the help of a non-vulcanised bonding gum. The cutting of such flat tread gives rise to a tread splice during the retreading process. Not only does this waste material but also reduces the chances of uniform attachment of the new tread. There are good chances that the adhesion can be non-uniform and this decreases reliability and performance.
It thus comes as no surprise that a little more than 25% of cold retreaded tyres in Europe are produced through the use of Marangoni technology and this market share is only expected to grow. There are a few important reasons for this:
- It saves time
- It saves resources
- And most importantly, the system helps manufacture retreaded tyres that offer high levels of performance and safety.
Here's a detailed look into the step by step differences that exist between a normal cold retreading system and the RINGTREAD system:
BUFFING
Traditional buffing of a flat tread does not remove the residual tread uniformly (right tyre in figure 1).This causes deformation and weak points after the retreading that lead to overheating in the tyres and higher chances of tread separation.
In the RINGBUILDER Saturn, buffing is performed to obtain a Convex shaped carcass that is uniform along the surface (left tyre in figure 1) so that the convex shaped buffing perfectly matches to the curvature of the tread ring. This process ensures maximum adhesion between the new tread and the casing, which improves the performance of the retreaded tyre on the road and increases tyre life.

BUILDING
Normal cold retreading systems use a flat tread which is then stuck onto the carcass and made to follow the curvature of the casing. This necessitates the need for it to be cut to length and spliced. The tread pattern thus becomes prone to longitudinal and transverse deformation.
The RINGTREAD system though uses only one tread that, because of its tailor-made ring, does not have any weak joints or points. The advantages are improved reliability and better performance.
CURING
In normal systems. during the curing process, the pattern can change at the location of the tread splice. This causes the increased possibility of a tread lift at the splice.
The Ring shaped tread in the RINGTREAD system allows the curing to be uniform around the complete circumference of the tyre. The advantages are an impeccable appearance, and uniformity of the tread pattern.
Gum Application
The strip size cushion available on the RINGBUILDER Saturn, while does not totally eliminate the need to fill larger craters, does permit a reduced and precise application of the right quantity of extruded cushion-gum ( adhesive) over multiple rotations on the crown and shoulder of the tyre casing.
The Ringbuilder Saturn is a next gen machinery that will facilitate the use of Marangoni’s cold retreading technology -- the RINGTREAD System, which utilises splice-less, pre-cured tread rings and offers an accessible 10 tyres per hour capacity at very low prices.
