The Cyber Tyre uses its sensors to detect sub-optimal and risky road conditions to transmit warnings about the same to the vehicle and other nearby drivers through the 5G network.
Pirelli has become the first tyre company in the world to use the 5G network to transmit information detected by intelligent tyres regarding the road surface. The company presented the worlds-first 5G enhanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) service as a case study during the "5G Path of Vehicle-to-Everything Communication” event organized by the 5GAA – Automotive Association (of which Pirelli is a member).
Several companies along with Pirelli like Ericsson, Audi, Tim, Italdesign and KTH together demonstrated the process involved in how a vehicle equipped with the sensor-fitted Pirelli Cyber Tyre and connected to the 5G network was able to transmit the risk of aquaplaning detected by the tyres to its own and a following car. These capabilities of the cyber tyre are all possible due to the ultra-high band and low latency of the 5G network.

The Pirelli Cyber Tyre will be equipped with an internal sensor, which will supply a plethora of tyre related data to the car. The tyre model, kilometers clocked, dynamic load will all be visible to the driver. Furthermore, for the very first time, information regarding potential dangers on road surfaces will also be transmitted to the driver. Everything from the presence of water to poor grip will be transmitted instantaneously to the driver. This information will prove pivotal in enabling the car to adapt its control and driving assistance systems, thereby exponentially improving the level of safety, comfort and performance offered by the vehicle.
The company also plans to build a cyber tyre network where, in addition to its own vehicle, the tyres will also transmit information to other cars and infrastructure it can find. Thanks to the potential of 5G, Pirelli is able to use the tyre to build a massive communication network that can easily incorporate the entire on-road transportation system of today. A step that will actively contribute to the development of solutions and services for future mobility and systems of autonomous driving.
