Pirelli Tyres recently announced that they have been chosen to be the official OE supplier and tyre partner for the new Aston Martin DBX SUV.
Pirelli Tyre S.p.A. remarked that it took almost three years of extensive testing and hard work for them to keep working with Aston Martin to come up with the absolute perfect fitments for the very first SUV by the luxury car maker.
The result? Three tyres specially crafted by Pirelli to cover for every possible terrain the SUV can encounter . A P Zero for summers and gran tourismo, Scorpion Zero AS for the adventure junkie to get the best off-road performance and the Scorpion Winter to tackle Snow/Winter conditions.
The tyres were tested to the very limit in different conditions to critique and improve them continuously. The on road and wet weather testing took place at Pirelli's test track in Vizzola, Italy, while tyre performance on ice and snow was thoroughly tested at Pirelli's winter test facility at Fleurheden, Sweden. Performance ratings were validated at the high speed Nardo circuit in southern Italy and finally, the tyres had to prove their worthiness at the ruthless Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.
The tyre sizes for the vehicle will be 285/40&R22 for the front and 325/35YR22 for the rear tyres. These tyres will be mounted on 22-inch alloy wheels (10J x 22 front/ 11.5J x 22 rear).
P ZERO, A TYRE FOR SUMMERS
The new Aston Martin DBX gets the P Zero tyres as standard for summer and wet weather usage. The compound used on the tyres has been developed specially for the SUV, with Pirelli taking inspiration from tyres used for GT cars. The decision has helped Aston Martin get the very best out of their SUV both in terms of performance and power. Thats not all, the P Zero compound was also designed to offer the best traction on track with Pirelli killing two birds with one stone.
The zero-degree belt in the structure of this P Zero marked A8A on the sidewall (to identify specific tyres for the Aston Martin DBX) uses a new hybrid material that offers better steering feel and a reduction in tyre weight that has also helped in bringing down the rolling resistance and fuel consumption.
SCORPION ZERO AS THE OFF-ROAD TYRES
The Pirelli Scorpion Zero AS was developed by Pirelli to enable the SUV to tackle the roughest terrains out there. The luxury car maker wanted to make sure that their SUV was versatile and will not shy away from taking "the road less travelled". The tread pattern had to thus be redesigned and more rigid blocks were added towards the outside of the contact patch that provide enhanced grip in tricky conditions.
SCORPION WINTER TO TACKLE WINTERS AND SNOW
Pirelli’s specialised winter tyre for SUVs, The Scorpion Winter is notorious for being one of the most ridiculously well built winter tyres out there. The winter tyres ensure that the SUV has the best rubber on the planet that is capable of dealing with temperatures as low as 30 degrees centigrade and extreme levels of snow. How do they manage to do this? Pirelli has modified the materials that make up the carcass of the tyre to provide the best possible steering feel even in winters and snow. There is absolutely nothing that this beast cant handle!
