Pirelli: Race Circumstances Led To Tyre Failures in Silverstone

Pirelli which has been known for being one of the best performance tyre makers for Formula one stated that the issues with the tyre in the later part of British Grand Prix where we saw Lewis Hamilton finish the race with only three wheels is said to have been caused by using the tyre unusually longer.

Hamilton was at the verge of losing but due to sheer luck and experience, he won the British Grand Prix with just three tyres! His teammate Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz Jr of McLaren also had similar issues with the tyre which led the safety car to come out.

Pirelli, the only tyre supplier for Formula One stated that the "key reason behind the tyre problems was a set of individual race circumstances that led to an extremely long use of the second set of tyres".

They further mentioned- "Combined with the notably increased pace of the 2020 Formula 1 cars (pole position was 1.2 seconds faster compared to 2019) this made the final laps of the British Grand Prix especially tough, as a consequence of the biggest forces ever seen on tyres generated by the fastest Formula 1 cars in history. "

"The overall result was the most challenging operating conditions for tyres. These led to the front-left tyre (which is well-known for working hardest at Silverstone) being placed under maximum stress after a number of laps, with the resulting high wear meaning that it was less protected from the extreme forces in play."

It was officially stated that the second race which will mark the 70th anniversary of the F1 World championship, will use three types of tyres which will be further harder in construction and compound than the tyres which were used in the British Grand Prix which was held on Sunday.

Pirelli also mentioned that the tyre set up will be reviewed, analysed and altered. A higher minimum pressure will be maintained to reduce the stress on the tyres in the upcoming race.
