The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) announced on Friday that steps will be taken immediately to remove all speed breakers present on National Highways.
The move along with the introduction of FASTags, when fully implemented, will definitely play a major role in transforming highway commuting for the people of India.

The Ministry remarked:
“With the effective implementation of FASTag on toll plazas and conversion of cash toll lanes to FASTag lanes, the speed breakers/rumble strips constructed at toll plazas are being removed with immediate effect for smooth vehicular movement,”
The step, as suggested by the Ministry, has been taken to ensure obstacle-free travel for ambulances, elderly and unwell people, who are commuting on national highways.

Furthermore, the move will also reduce barriers to speed which will help increase fuel efficiency on national highways. India is hugely dependent on fuel imports and its important the the roads be optimized for fuel efficient functioning.
Road safety too, has been key factor influencing the decision. The maximum speed on National highways was increased to 100 km/hr in 2018, a move made to increase flow of traffic to save fuel and time of people. With vehicles travelling at such high speeds, the number of accidents and deaths reported due to speed breakers has been consistently high for the last few years. Its high time that speed breakers be finally removed from national highways to make it safer for people to travel at such speeds.
