Michael Masi: F1 Tyre Barrier AT T9 Will be Extended

As Formula 1 drivers return to the same venue as the next Grand Prix is to be held, the configuration that is the 'Outer Loop' layout used in the previous race will see changes since the unforeseen crash by Grosjean has caused great concern among the F1 community.

However, one common part of the track in the two layouts of the Grand Prix is the opening corners where Grosjean crashed heavily, which then burst into flames. The Frenchman emerged from the wreckage with burns to his hands since he was stuck for nearly 28 seconds.

Formula 1 race director Michael Masi confirmed changes were made to the safety barriers based on investigations, which took place during the week.

“The F1 tyre barrier on the right-hand side of T9 will be extended and increased in depth to four rows of tyres with conveyor belt,” Masi said.

“The right-hand kerb between T8 and T9 will be removed to reduce the risk of a car becoming airborne while the Outer circuit layout is being used.

“These changes are in accordance with Article 5 of the FIA Circuit Licence conditions of issue, and as such the current FIA Grade 1 licence for all configurations of Bahrain International circuit remains valid.”

Replaced by a temporary concrete wall during last weekend’s Grand Prix, new armco has been installed behind the newly placed tyre wall at the spot of Grosjean’s accident.

Gorsjean mentioned the whole scene of the accident that took place. He mentioned that he was about to lose hope but the image of his children made him struggle again to somehow get himself out of the fire ball. He managed to survive with burns on his hand and foot and says that it was a miracle. The Frenchman thanked the responders and track marshals who saved his life.

An investigation has since been launched by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), who confirmed on Thursday that it is "expected to take around 6-8 weeks to complete before findings are made public".

"As with all serious accidents, we will analyse every aspect of this crash and collaborate with all parties involved," FIA Safety Director Adam Baker said.

"With so much data available in Formula One, it allows us to accurately determine every element of what occurred and this work has already begun.

"We take this research very seriously and will follow a rigorous process to find out exactly what happened before proposing potential improvements."

Drivers feel that the previous barrier failed to keep the car and driver safe and that the F1 tyre barrier placed at T9 is a good move.
