Learn About Zipper Rupture of Tyres And How It Occurs

Tyre bursts are one of the most hazardous scenarios that even causes death of people. The Owners of vehicles are often warned about tyre bursts which could take place due to a bad tyre that could be the result of poor maintenance.

Zipper rupture of a tyre as the name tells is the failure of tyres which results in a blowout that leaves an even line of steel cords exposed. This makes it look like a zipper which is opened. They are said to be 12 inches to 13 inches long but can extend up to 30 to 35 inches in length.

The zipper rupture is visible on tyres when the rupture starts from one point and then moves in both the directions because of the quick load transfer to the nearest steel body plies till the air pressure escapes. This type of tyre blowout will only occur on one side of the tyre.

Basically, zipper ruptures takes place in tyres that have been run flat or underinflated severely. Low inflation could result in pressure on the sidewall which would lead to flexing creating fatigue in the cords.

As the air pressure in the tyre decreases and gets close to 0 Psi, the cords get compressed as the tyre rolls. This produces bending of the cords severely. The usage of tyres with such a condition where the wire cords are bent thousands of times as the tyres rolls, would lead the tyre to become weak and may even result in breaking.

Continued operation of an underinflated tyre would result in the weakening of steel radial sidewalls. When the tyre after being in this condition is reinflated, the pressure placed back into the tyre pushes against the chords that now, no longer have the strength to hold the structure of the tyre. The result would be a tyre burst with an explosion. As a matter of fact the tyre pressure exceeds 40 Psi, when a zipper rupture occurs.

The blast of the air due to the rupture will cause serious injury if you are in its way and can even cause fatality. It is common to see people permanently lose their hearing ability or get injured by tools around the tyre cage. The air pressure released from the tyre could even create a concussion which could also result in death.

So it is advised to inspect the tyres after they receive a puncture, wear or tear. In the case of run flat tyres, manufacturers recommend replacing such tyres. It is advised to take maximum precaution while working on tyres because of the effect that it could create on your family and loved ones.
