JK tyre, leading tyre manufacturing company is focusing on reduction of carbon emission at its manufacturing facilities. The company plans to double the usage of biomass at its manufacturing units in the current financial year.
JK tyre has been working towards the reduction of coal consumption in its plants and from last year, they have been working towards the goal which is to reduce carbon emission by using biomass at its units.
The manufacturer claims that the previous year's biomass consumption was almost 8 percent of its total energy consumption and the target for this year's biomass consumption is around 18 percent.
Anil Makkar, Manufacturing director at JK tyre stated that the company is looking forward in the utilisation of biomass in large scale. The problem which stands in their path is the lack of availability and transportation of biomass.

He further added that despite the issue, the company is keen in using at least 15 to 16 percent of biomass in their manufacturing units which will provide them savings from the usage of coal.

The company is excited to make the required modifications to be able to use biomass and reach the target they have set. Makkar said that in the year 2013, the company had initiated many measures to reduce the carbon footprint and contributed renewable energy from 2014 to 2017 which was around 3 percent.
Makkar added that the renewable power consumption of the units was almost 50 percent of the total consumption. The company were able to handle and reduce almost 48 percent of its CO2 emission within just five years. The company also has plans to install solar power equipment at its Chennai plant by adding about 10 million units of solar power but since it is the pandemic period, the plan is said to delay.
Makkar further mentioned that the company plans to invest and may require some time to implement the project.

JK tyre has promised to attain zero carbon emission manufacturing plants and use 100 percent renewable source of energy to run the plants by the year 2050. The company is keen in attaining the target with the utilisation of biomass, alternative fuel technology, waste to energy conversion methods etc.
“June has shown some green shoots in the replacement market and we believe things will get back to normal by the third quarter. By August, we are planning to operate at 70% capacity and by the third quarter we should be reaching 100% in Chennai plant,” he said.
