What is the National Road Safety Week?

The National Safety Council of India has been tasked with the responsibility of organizing the National Road Safety Week in India every year in January. The National Safety Council is an autonomous body set up by the Indian government to engage the public on safety, health and environment issues.
Every hour 17 people die in India due to road accidents. Road safety has for long been a major public health concern for authorities in India. Our country unfortunately ranks number 1 in the world w.r.t number of road accident deaths across the 199 countries (reported in the World Road Statistics for 2018), followed by China and US. Almost 1.5 lakh lives were lost in 2018 alone in road accidents.
Initiatives like the Road Safety Week thus become a must for the government to guide the people of India in the right direction with respect to road safety and road rules. India’s Ministry of Road Transport & Highways makes sure that regional governments takes the initiative seriously and continuously monitors and suggests activities for them to conduct during the week. The Ministry also provides financial resources to each state government to help them organize everything properly so that they can get the message out to as many people as they can.

Usually a theme is decided for the Road Safety Week each year. For example: the 2014 theme was ‘When on the road, always say Pehle Aap (you first)’ which aimed to create awareness about allowing passage to emergency vehicles as well as defensive driving. 2013's Road Safety Week theme was ‘Stay alive, don’t drink and drive’.
The NSC ( National Safety Council) collaborates with the regional governments and the state traffic police to organize drives, awareness campaigns, workshops and several other initiatives with the support and participation of schools, colleges, community groups, emergency services professionals and businesses as a part of the Road Safety Week. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and the International Road Federation are also frequently involved in the safety week conducted every year.
A few common initiatives taken by the traffic police are:
- Increased deployment to nab violaters who speed or drink and drive
- Distributing high-visibility reflector tape to cyclists to increase their visibility
- Road safety awareness days in schools
- Running training on road safety for professionals who drive at work.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways also asks each state government to organize 'walkathons' and marches that actively involve students, parents and other stakeholder like the police as a means to raise awareness about road safety.
