Identify The Different Types Of Tyre Wear

Tyres need traction or else they are not worth anything. If you use a tyre which has seen better days then it stands as a hazard. Traction is an important element that a tyre requires so that your vehicle can be handled easily without much effort. The stability of the vehicle partially depends on the tyres too.

It is important to check the tread on the tyres to keep you and your vehicle safe so here are some of the types of tread wear mentioned below:

Center wear:

Centre wear is a caused because of over inflation of tyres consistently. This wear is characterized by a lot of tyre degradation in the centre of the tyre which makes the shoulders rise up a level above the rest of the tyre. When the tyre is over inflated, the pressure or load on the tyre is concentrated in the center as a result of which the center part of the tyres wear faster than the shoulder part.

Side wear:

Side wear is caused because of under inflation of tyres consistently. This type of wear is characterized by sides being worn out than the center of the tyre. You can easily identify side wears. Try looking out for wear on the shoulder of the tyre. You could see that the center remains a level above the side with better tread blocks on the shoulder.

Cupping:

Bad shock absorption or faulty suspension causes areas of the tread to resemble like scooped out cups. Tyre degradation is visible. This usually occurs in multiple areas on the tyre. One could feel vibrations and bouncy feelings as the tyre rolls.

Feathering:

Feathering is caused by an improper alignment of tyres. It results in small rivets and dips along the surface of the tyre. It is usually hard to find the spot for many people. The only way to find feathering would be by running your hand over the surface of the tyre and feeling the tread.

Flat spot wear:

Flat spot wear is usually caused by aggressive braking. However, if you have not been braking aggressively then you should get your braking system checked for problems which could be causing flat spot wear.

Camber wear:

Camber wear can be easily identified. It is characterized by a slope of the surface of the tyre towards one side. It is caused due to excessive positive or negative camber.
