Hankook And YASE Launches Footwear Made Of Recycled Tyres

As part of its commitment to making the world a better place, global leading tyre producer Hankook Tire has partnered with shoe brand YASE to launch eco-friendly footwear made of recycled tyres.

YASE is a leather shoe brand based in Korea that was founded in 2013. With a dedication to sustainable materials and environmental protection, Hankook Tire and YASE launched the ‘ZERO – LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND' concept. Hankook has made tyre recycling one of the top priorities each year because sustainability is a core value and essential agenda for the company. Given that rubber is a primary raw material in shoe outsoles, Hankook partnered with YASE on the basis of YASE and Hankook sharing the same aim in terms of lowering environmental impact.

Hankook chose footwear as the partnership item, pointing out that tyres and shoes both play an important role in movement and are constantly in contact with the ground. They also provide endurance and stability to protect people from any traffic hazards.

A pair of shoes is a necessity that people utilise on a daily basis, thus this cross-industry partnership has added meaning. It will provide MZ generation members with the opportunity to try Hankook Tire for the first time. Not only are the shoes themselves made with sustainability in mind, but so is the packaging. The shoebox, tags, and pamphlets are all constructed entirely of sugarcane. Hankook anticipates that this will appeal to clients who are early adopters and environmentally conscientious.

With the objective of 'future innovated, innovation realised,' Hankook has been at the forefront of innovation. Through technology developments and R&D expenditures that support its discoveries, the company seeks to achieve the future that customers envision. Hankook Tire isn't the first company to produce footwear through a cross-industry relationship. Hankook collaborated with Vibram, a premium outsole firm, in 2015 to design concept tyres and shoes in order to gain acclaim for its unique DNA and challenge attitude.

Jimmy Kwon, Vice President of Hankook Tire’s Brand Lab says, "We are happy to announce the collaboration which leads to mutually inspired progressive innovation for both companies. It’s thrilling that we can help customers choose footwear that will contribute to making the world a greener place. It’s also great to see our tires that have reached the end of their lives turning into outsoles of footwear to take people to where they want with much comfort like they did on vehicles. Shoes made of our old tires will not only make a positive social impact but also will be hard-wearing and robust as our tires are developed with high-quality materials and cutting-edge technologies."

Five products will be released as a result of the collaboration: four dress shoes and one comfort insole. Chelsea boots, square toe Chelsea boots, Derby shoes, and square toe Derby shoes make up the dress shoe range. In Korea, they are available for purchase online. Hankook Tire aims to continue working with YASE in October to release a new running shoe brand.
