It is a known fact that off-road terrains are not easy on 4x4 vehicles. The owners of 4x4 vehicles often try to install new mods to boost the power output of the beastly machines to move over any type of terrain.
However, these machines which are powered with performance engines capable of providing power for any kind of surface might get you stuck without the proper tyres. The end to the fun of driving off-road comes by being stuck on a muddy terrain. It is for this purpose that Mud-tyres were created so that the fun continues.
Here is everything that you would need to know about mud tyres:
Types of mud tires
Mud terrain tyres: The mud terrain tyres as the name suggests are made for off-road mud trails. Mud terrain tyres have thick and deep treads which have heavily reinforced sidewalls to help you move through the thick. sludge and deep muddy terrain without getting the vehicle stuck. However, these tyres are not legal to be used on normal tarmac roads.
Hybrid mud terrain tyres:
Hybrid mud tyres are similar to the all-terrain tyres but have uniquely designed tread patter which are wide that helps to chuck out the mud and debris from the tyres. These tyres can travel well on gravel and sand roads which are usually rough. They can be also used on paved roads.
Hybrid mud and snow terrain tyres:
Some Hybrid mud and snow tyres are suitable for temperatures in places where snowfall is common since they have hard rubber. These tyres have studded treads that will provide ample traction on snow and ice. They can also go through the thick snow and mud terrains like a breeze.

Lugs:
Mud tyres are known for having wide and aggressive tread pattern which are known as lugs. In the scenario of driving off-road on muddy and slippery conditions, these lugs helps the driver by providing maximum traction.
Reinforced sidewalls:
Mud tyres have durable and reinforced sidewalls that will protect the tyres from being punctured by debris on the road or while driving off-road. It is advised to consider mud tyres with at least 3- ply reinforced sidewalls to protect the tyres from rocks and other hazards.
Tread ply:
The tread of the mud tyres are reinforced considering that of a highway tyre. It is advised to choose a tyre that has been constructed with 6-ply tread which are suitable for simple off-road trails. It is recommended to use 8-9 ply if you drive over rough off-road conditions.
Bias vs. radial
The tyres that are only suitable for off-roads are constructed with bias-ply which are made from overlapping the layers of rubber. These tyres are known for wearing more quickly compared to other tyres. Some hybrid tyres are constructed radial which lasts longer and provides smooth ride quality but the downside is that they wont provide the amount of traction on slippery surfaces.
