Technically, developing tyres for electric city buses is quite difficult. Electric bus tyres must withstand higher loads than those on buses powered by combustion engines. Then there's deceleration, because the vehicle's electric motor provides power to charge the battery when it brakes. The workload on the driving axle tyres is increased even more by this recuperation procedure. There is also a special focus on rolling noise for buses that run in downtown areas. “In city traffic, vehicles must be especially quiet to ensure that the comfort-enhancing benefits of the electric powertrain are not ruined by tyre noise,” Kaiser adds.
E-Tyres call for close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers:
New drive systems and the associated new vehicle concepts are changing the demands placed on tyres and driving the need for new development concepts. For many years, Continental has been gathering valuable real-world experience through joint field trials. “Resolving conflicting goals – especially mileage versus braking performance, handling and rolling resistance – is technically demanding,” concludes Hinnerk Kaiser. “This presents us with new challenges, but one thing’s for sure: We’re not going to be making any compromises when it comes to robustness and braking performance.” A green thumbs-up to that!
