Electric Buses From MAN In Hamburg Comes With Continental Tyres

The electric MAN Lion's City buses operated by VHH in Hamburg run on the Continental Conti Urban HA3 tyres which are tailored to the weight of the batteries and the vehicle itself.

Future-proof mobility entails having sustainable mass transit for the greater Hamburg region for local transport operators Hamburg-Holstein GmbH (VHH). As a result, starting in 2020, VHH only bought zero-emission buses. The company's elexity brand encompasses all areas of sustainable mobility, from converting depot infrastructure to support electric mobility and offering special personnel training to using vehicles that run solely on renewable energy. VHH now has 32 electric buses in its fleet, with that number expected to increase by the end of 2021.

Between now and the 2030s, the entire fleet will be converted to zero-emission drivetrains. VHH, like many other local authorities and operators, discovered that moving to environmentally friendly transportation entailed breaking new ground. With its totally electric Lion's City bus, commercial vehicle maker MAN showed its support. The electric motor is positioned on the back axle of this people are influenced bus. Battery modules with a total capacity of 480 kWh provide energy.

The electric MAN Lion's City buses operated by VHH in Hamburg run on the Continental Conti Urban HA3 tyres, which are tailored to the weight of the batteries and the vehicle itself. Continental tyre designers have increased the load capacity of the tyre to meet the demands of electric mobility. When creating tyre designs for electric vehicles, this rise in the load index is merely one of several aspects to consider.

Continental has gained great experience in real-world experiments, such as the one with MAN, for several years. Because of the high demand for zero-emission electric fleets from municipalities and local transportation operators, as well as the increasing speed of development in the electric mobility segment, the demand for appropriate tyres is rapidly increasing. The EU Clean Vehicle Directive, as modified in 2019, is one driving force behind this shift.

Special requirements for tyres fitted on electric urban buses:

Technically, developing tyres for electric city buses is quite difficult. Electric bus tyres must withstand higher loads than those on buses powered by combustion engines. At the same time, they must provide the same mileage and adhere to the same safety requirements. “When pulling out and accelerating, electric bus tyres are subjected to more torque,” explains Hinnerk Kaiser.

Then there's deceleration, because the vehicle's electric motor provides power to charge the battery when it brakes. The workload on the driving axle tyres is increased even more by this recuperation procedure. There is also a special focus on rolling noise for buses that run in downtown areas. “In city traffic, vehicles must be especially quiet to ensure that the comfort-enhancing benefits of the electric powertrain are not ruined by tyre noise,” Kaiser adds.

E-Tyres call for close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers:

New drive systems and the associated new vehicle concepts are changing the demands placed on tyres and driving the need for new development concepts. For many years, Continental has been gathering valuable real-world experience through joint field trials. “Resolving conflicting goals – especially mileage versus braking performance, handling and rolling resistance – is technically demanding,” concludes Hinnerk Kaiser. “This presents us with new challenges, but one thing’s for sure: We’re not going to be making any compromises when it comes to robustness and braking performance.” A green thumbs-up to that!
