Snow chains are complex to deal with. It's not just the installation that can give you a headache, but even driving with them can be quite a task. So, here are a few tips you must keep in mind if you're thinking about using snow chains:
Test the chains before embarking on your journey
Installing snow chains is not an easy task. Even a small error like forgetting a hook or keeper can make the chains loose which can become a huge burden later on in the journey. It is thus recommended that you drive for a short distance and check for any indications of your chains being loose.
The ride in your vehicle will usually be louder than normal if they are loose. If you can hear sounds coming directly from your wheels, it may well be an indication that your chains are not fitted properly. Step out immediately and inspect the snow chains for any slack or loose ends.
Practice driving slowly
Driving fast with snow chains borderlines lunacy. You not only risk the chains coming off and lashing against your vehicle, but the chains themselves can get damaged and worn out beyond repair. A safe speed to drive with snow chains would be no more than 35 km/h. It is also important to understand that the chains only help your car move forward and play no role in helping you brake. So drive cautiously!

Get accustomed to driving with snow chains
Start off very slowly. The vehicle's driving dynamics will be very different once the chains are fitted on the tyres. It's easy to be overconfident about driving on snow but believe me when I tell you that it can be quite challenging. So take it slow and get used to the driving conditions first.
Give calm and composed inputs
DO NOT be rough or sudden with the inputs. Always use the accelerator, brake or steering in isolation. Do not try and do multiple things at one moment. Your driving has to be calm, composed and steady. Only give one input at a time to ensure the tyres are not overburdened. Too many inputs together or in quick succession will cause your tyres to loose traction.
Don't forget to remove the chains when you're on tarmac
When you're safely out of icy/snowy terrain, make sure you remove the chains if you don't need them. Running the chains on tarmac will completely ruin them and it will also take a toll on your suspension. You can also unknowingly damage the tarmac causing a lot of inconvenience to other road users.
