Bridgestone And Microsoft Produces A Tyre Warning System

Tyre damage monitoring system (TDMS) is a warning system that could potentially alert drivers of the dangerous defects that can develop after a period of time. Bridgestone has presented the details of a partnership with Microsoft which is an IT giant.

Bridgestone aims to extend tyre monitoring systems beyond the simple measuring of pressure. The company aims at reporting damage in real time with the help of the new tyre pressure monitoring system.

The tyre damage monitoring system detects damage using the existing hardware and software. It has the ability to detect bulges or splits which could have been cause by hitting a pothole. It alerts the driver in the same way that existing TPMS systems function.

The system also alerts the local authorities to check the location of the hazard that could have been caused by a tyre burst or damage and it also warns other connected cars of the hazard on their route.

Bridgestone proudly states that this is the first ever warning system in the world that can save lives by identifying the problem even before they become serious enough to cause accidents. In India, tyre failure is one of the reasons which causes serious accidents resulting in deaths according to the data of the transport department.

The system is designed in such a way that the newer vehicles with tyre pressure monitoring system can have an enhanced version. Bridgestone says that it can be used without any additional hardware on any type of car that uses the Microsoft Connected Vehicle Platform (MCVP). There are various brands which use MCVP as an OEM option such as the well known Ford and Volkswagen.

The MCVP cloud works together with the data from the existing sensors. The TDMS uses algorithms to detect events affecting the tyre surface and the carcass. The driver will be immediately alerted of the hazard via a dashboard warning which will help in taking action before the problem becomes worse.

Bridgestone says that by identifying where the damage has occurred through the connected system, the officials from the road maintenance authority will be alerted about the potential hazards such as a porthole more quickly. The company states that the Vehicle-to-vehicle communication will become a common platform where alerts following the harzard could be placed.

Laurent Dartoux, CEO and president of Bridgestone EMIA, says that digital is such a huge part of how the industry functions. It is imperative that the company works with the leading industry partners who would support the needs of the company.
He further added that by teaming up with Microsoft, the company now has the opportunity of bringing the TDMS to millions of drivers, offering them better safety.
