Bimbra Fulfils Your 4x4 Dreams Again. This Time It's With A Modified Gypsy

A Deserving Ode To the 4x4 Legend...

Folks obsessed with the automotive world would agree that modifying cars is truly an art. A person modifying a car is pretty much like a painter or a sculptor. He envisions his creation, works around with the colors and the parts in his head, and eventually goes on to build the car bit by bit.

An exceptionally modified car for us is honestly no less than the Mona Lisa. Its a work of art. A masterpiece. And just like the Mona Lisa, it never fails to leave its mark on you. But that's exactly what building and modifying cars is about. It's pure emotion that can make the toughest of men go weak in the knees.

And that is precisely why we're here, to pay tribute to a magnificent ode to Maruti's 4x4 legend: The Gypsy.

Modified Gypsy

Gurgaon based Bimbra whipped up some 4x4 magic once again and just like we had previously witnessed with the Phoenix, there is a lot more to it than meets the eye.

This time around it's the good old Maruti Gypsy. This modified Gypsy that you see belongs to Picasso himself, Mr. Taran, owner and "sculptor" of Bimbra 4x4. This is a 2008 model that was brought by him in 2013 and eventually modified into another one of Bimbra's finest projects.

Let's start off with the most important thing here: the tyres. As you can see, the SUV is running on a massive upsize that has been made possible with the help of a two-inch lift kit. The all-terrain tyres that you see are Maxxis's 980 Bravo tyres that are mounted on the stock 15-inch steel rims. The upsized Maxxis tyres measure 31x10.50 R15 with a load index of 109 and a speed rating "S".

This essentially means that each tyre can withstand a load of about 1030 kgs. That's roughly 4000 kgs of carrying capacity with all four of them put together!

Just to give you some perspective of the upsize, the stock Gypsy tyre size is 205/70 R15 in metric and when converted to the inch system measures 26.9X8.5R15. That's basically two inches smaller in width and almost four inches off the diameter of the upsized tyre that is fitted in that SUV!

With the two-inch lift kit and the four inches from the tyres, the SUV gains 6 inches of extra height from the modification.

Coming back to the 980 Bravos, Maxxis is renowned for making some amazing all-terrain tyres and this one is no less. Here are some of the features that these tyres boast of:

Maxxis 980 Bravo AT
  • Outstanding all-terrain traction - Provides extra grip and outstanding self-cleaning, all thanks to the deep tread blocks and an all-new zig-zag tread pattern.
  • Increased damage resistance - Long tread life is coupled with a robust nylon cap ply for added puncture resistance and improved bruise protection.
  • Tapered tread blocks and square shoulders- The mud gets easily pushed out giving you much better grip on slopes.
  • Wide tread footprint- Assures stability, even under heavy loads.
  • Puncture resistant compound and nylon cap ply- Hammer the tyre as much as you want and it will not let you down.
  • High load capacity- Heavy loads and towing pose no danger.

As far as the exteriors are concerned, the SUV gets customised wheel arches that are extended by 6-inches. Both the stock bumpers have been replaced by metal ones and the wheel arches along with the bumpers are line-x coated. A two-inch lift kit has also been used along with profender shockers.

The stock headlights have been replaced with HID installations accompanied by sports LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights). The SUV also gets an original hardtop and retains the stock grille that comes with the vehicle. Both these units are line-x coated as well.

The engine is completely untouched and the stock 1.3-litre petrol engine churns out a good 80 bhp along with a peak torque of 103 Nm. There is however, a BMC air filter that is installed which ensures a higher airflow, a working snorkel that helps in reducing the chances of water entering your engine, and a performance exhaust that provides a quicker, more efficient escape for the exhaust gases.

And finally, to top it all off, Bimbra has gone for a body wrap that you can see is visible on the doors along with its signature BIMBRA 4X4 decals.

There's so much stuff going on in this little SUV, it's almost impossible to fit the entire modification in one article. This Gypsy was another great example of Bimbra's brilliance when it comes to modifying cars. The modifications and the tyres especially have taken the mundane Gypsy to a whole new level.
