RSDC And ATMA To Train 5 Lakh Tyre Mechanics By 2022

Jolted by the fact that 12-13% of accidents in India happen due to faulty tyre fitments or punctures, the Rubber Skill Development Council (RSDC) has set a target of training 5 lakh certified tyre mechanics by 2022 to bring down the statistic.

Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association has partnered with RSDC in this campaign of up-skilling tyre fitters. The training programme comes under the umbrella of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) component of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).

The decision comes against the backdrop of the recent successful programme involving 35,000 tyre fitters during the current year so far. These tyre mechanics have been assessed, re-skilled, upskilled and certified across 119 districts in about 19 states under the "Saamarth’ project" of RSDC.

The training during the programme goes beyond the classroom with specially developed mobile skill vans being used to reach out to tyre mechanics in different regions. The vans carry tyre fitting and repairing equipment along with trained staff.

18 mobile vans were flagged off recently by Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, increasing the total number of vans available for training to 40.

Under the 'Saamarth' skilling project, RSDC plans to train not only factory workers but also rubber plantation workers along with showroom and workshop staff under the "Saamarth" skilling project.

Vinod Simon, chairman RSDC, also stated that a total of 250 crores have been allotted to them for 4 years to spend and train workers in the rubber and tyre industry.

He remarked:

"The training will be provided under the RSDC's 'Saamarth' skilling project under which RSDC plans to train not only factory workers but also rubber plantation workers and showroom and workshop people regarding tyre fitment too so that the number of trained personnel increase wrt to tyre knowledge."

"The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship under which this project is being run has set a target of one lakh tyre mechanics to be re-skilled and certified during the current fiscal itself. RSDC is all set to cross that target, having already trained 64,000 people and another 1.5 lakh waiting in line to be trained by March 31, 2020. "
