The International Carbon Black Association (ICBA) awarded 12 Birla Carbon sites certificates of recognition for attaining a level of safety performance above the industry average, establishing the company as a leader in the field of safety performance. The two R&D centres in the United States and India are among the locations. For the calendar year 2020, these facilities have been awarded the Gold level of recognition for their safety efforts. For the third year in a row, seven of the 12 sites have continuously obtained the Gold grade.
Birla Carbon factories across North and South America, Europe, and Asia received a total of twelve gold awards. This achievement is even more significant since, despite the hurdles posed by the COVID-19 epidemic and its impact on staff and manufacturing facilities around the world, Birla Carbon maintained its global safety standards for all of its employees.
Speaking about the recognition, Joe Gaynor, Chief Legal, Risk, and Sustainability Officer, Birla Carbon, said, “Despite the challenging times which were faced due to the pandemic, Birla Carbon continued to build and maintain its culture of safety, globally. All our plants maintained the highest safety standards for all employees, which is in many ways built on our purpose to ‘Share the Strength’”. He further added, “Such recognition by the ICBA only emphasizes the value of safety for Birla Carbon and its employees and across the industry. I want to thank the ICBA for this recognition, as it motivates the industry to partner and work towards a stronger and safer future for everyone.”

The 'Safety Recognition Program' honours plants that go above and beyond to protect workers in the carbon black business. The idea is for everyone to leave the jobsite in the same manner that they arrived.
The ICBA established this award to recognise exceptional safety records and to educate policymakers and the general public about the carbon black industry's true commitment to making employee safety a precondition for successful operations. It is a voluntary initiative in which participating organisations submit data on their safety performance from the previous year, which is then certified by the ICBA Board of Directors. Awards are presented in three categories, with the highest honours going to sites that meet several award criteria:

Bronze Awards are presented to locations that had no Lost Work Day (LWD) cases for their employees in 2020. An LWD case is one in which the employee suffers a work-related injury or sickness that results in one or more lost workdays after the injury.
Silver Awards honour sites that met the Bronze Award requirements or improved by more than 50% from the previous year, and had zero medical aid or OSHA recordable incidents, or improved by more than 50% from the previous year; zero fires or property damage incidents with an impact of more than $100K; and zero regulatory citations for safety-related violations.
Gold Awards were given to sites that met the Silver Award criteria and received an external safety or environmental management system certification, such as ISO 45001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, OSHA VPP, or equivalent 3rd party MGMT System certification; or implemented a company-specific safety management system and had zero LWD cases for more than three years.
