Greenergy Dedicates A New Facility To Make Fuel With Tyres

Greenergy has confirmed that they have a new facility dedicated to utilize used tyres as feedstock for low-carbon and low-sulfur fuel production. The company stated that the tyres will be pyrolyzed to create oil which will be used later to catalytically convert fuel by a process called as HydroFlex.

This process has been developed by Haldor Topsoe, a specialist in this field. In addition to this recycling process of tyres, Greenergy will create carbon black which will also be used further in the production of new tyres and industrial products.

Christian Flach, CEO of Greenergy, said, “We have been exploring innovative ways to produce liquid fuels from different waste products to continue to create new forms of development fuels and deliver further carbon savings in the years ahead.

"This milestone for the project is a key part of our strategy to expand our industry-leading renewables business. Our customers will continue to benefit from our integrated approach to manufacturing and blending of renewable fuels.”

According to Greenergy, the first of its kind multi-functional facility will be located at the Thames Enterprise Park, east of London, UK, and is subject to planning approval.

The intention is to commence commercial production in 2025, with an option to include an independent plant capable of producing SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) using the same Hydroflex technology. In the first phase, the company will process up to 300 tons of shredded tyres each day.

Fei Chen, senior vice president of clean fuels and chemical technology at Haldor Topsoe, commented, “We are very happy that Greenergy has selected Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology for this innovative project. We are excited to work closely with Greenergy and their partners to build the world’s first commercial plant to produce low-carbon transportation fuels from waste tyres in the near future. This is very much in line with Topsoe’s vision to be recognized as the global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies by 2024.”
